JOB SUMMARY:
We are looking for a Consultant (Translation &Transcription), with demonstrated experience in translating and transcribing qualitative interviews from Odia to English, preferably in domains of public health, health systems, or social sciences research.
The consultant will support the PRAKASH implementation research project by accurately translating and transcribing in-depth interviews (IDIs), focus group discussions (FGDs), and other recorded interactions conducted with community members, frontline health workers, and other key stakeholders. The role requires a strong understanding of qualitative research contexts, high linguistic accuracy, and sensitivity to local terminology and cultural nuances.
Key Responsibilities:
- Translate and transcribe qualitative interview recordings (IDIs, FGDs, & recorded interactions) from Odia to English with high linguistic accuracy and contextual fidelity.
- Ensure verbatim transcription, preserving local expressions, meanings, pauses, and non-verbal cues (where relevant), while maintaining clarity and readability in English.
- Adhere strictly to confidentiality, data protection, and ethical guidelines, including secure handling of audio files, transcripts, and related documents in compliance with organization’s requirements.
- Deliver outputs within agreed timelines and quality benchmarks, following standardized transcription and translation formats provided by the project team.
- Coordinate with the PI and the research scientists for clarifications on context, terminology, and participant narratives, as required.
- Flag off any data quality related issues, unclear audio segments, or contextual ambiguities encountered during transcription or translation.
- Undertake any other related tasks as given from time to time by the Principal Investigator (PI).
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in any discipline (Master’s degree will be preferred)
Experience:
- Relevant and proven experience in translation and transcription of qualitative interviews, preferably within health, nutrition, social development, or academic research projects.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong bilingual proficiency in Odia and English, with the ability to accurately convey meaning, tone, and context across languages.
- High attention to detail, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and consistency in transcription and translation outputs.
- Sound understanding of qualitative research processes, including IDIs, FGDs, and narrative data handling.
- Excellent listening and comprehension skills, including the ability to transcribe audio with varied accents, speech patterns, and background noise.
- Strong time management and self-organization skills, with the ability to meet deliverable-based timelines independently.
- Commitment to confidentiality, ethical conduct, and data security, especially while handling sensitive qualitative data.
- Basic proficiency in MS Word and document formatting, adhering to standardized transcription and translation templates and flexible to incorporate feedback and revisions.
NATURE OF ENGAGEMENT:
- The selected candidate shall be offered a six-month contract, with the possibility of extension, based on continued availability of funding and performance.
