Discomfort in the centre of chest at rest is the specific symptom for heart stroke. The discomfort may spread to the throat and neck, to the back, or to the left arm. Occasionally, people have discomfort in upper abdomen and is mistaken as acidity. Pain that is pointed with a finger or that increases on pressure or movement or deep breathing or coughing is generally not due to heart stroke. Presence of background risk factors like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, strong family history, and smoking will raise the probability of a chest discomfort as due to heart attack. Few patients present with breathing difficulty only. Rarely, heart attack can be silent.
